What is YAP?

Young Ambassadors for Peace is a peace-building initiative, which is voluntary in nature. It has three components: Training, Networking and Movement.

Since YAP was launched in 2001 under the leadership of Joy Balazo, many countries have become engaged in peace workshops beginning in Sri Lanka with Tamil, Muslim and Singhalese; then to Ambon, Indonesia with Muslims and Christians; to Solomon Islands, with Guadalcanal and Malaita people; to the Highlands of PNG with different tribal warring groups; to Bougainville between former Bougainville Revolutionary Army, Resistance group and community people; to the border of Thailand and Burma for the Karens, Burmese, Shan, Chin and other ethnic groups; to North East India with different ethnic groups and to the Philippines in Mindanao with Muslims and Christian groups.

The workshops help people recognize the layers of fear and mistrust that have blocked the communities' capacity to resolve the conflict. The transformation of the person is a key element as people re-discover themselves. The workshops do not impose ‘solutions’ but help communities find their own ways of resolving the conflict.

The results have been the transformation of people and establishing new levels of improved understanding and relationship.  Many thousands have taken part in workshops.

2 Corinthians 5:20
“So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

Support Joy Balazo

On Wednesday 29th October Joy Balazo, secretary and founder of Young Ambassadors for Peace - the peace and reconciliation program of Uniting Church Overseas Aid - was interviewed by Richard Fidler during the conversation hour on ABC radio.

The interview was inspired by Joy's recent trip to the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where she witnessed 32 enemy tribes signing peace agreements. This event has come from seven years of Joy's hard work in the region.

Joy was also interviewed recently by James Carleton on ABC Radio National. To listen to the interview click here

NEW NEWS: PEACE for the Hela Region

On the 2nd of October, 2008 a long hoped for event occurred with hugs, handshakes and flags flying high. No it wasn’t the Mardi Gras. 32 warring tribes based in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea came together to sign permanent peace treaties after decades of war and conflict. In some ways the two events are similar; they were both crowded, both colourful and both had a powerful and impacting statement to make.

The ‘Tari District Peace Agreement’ was negotiated through peace-building activities by a dedicated team of local volunteers working for Australian organisation, Young Ambassadors for Peace (YAP), a program of Uniting Church Overseas Aid.
